
Merida has been listed as one of the best cities to live in according to the Mexican agency, Gabinete de Comunicación Estratégica, in 2019
The Mexican Institute for Competitiveness, through their Urban Competitiveness Index, positioned the city as one of the best to invest in 2020
Condé Nast Traveler, in 2021, awarded Merida the fourth spot amongst the Best Cities in the World, under Bangkok, Tokio y Quebéc.
In 2019, the magazine CEO World published its results about criminality and put Merida just under Québec, Canada, as the safest city in the whole American continent. It's been described as the city with the least security problems in Latin America, because of its low index of violence in the Yucatan.
The State Government implemented the "Yucatan Seguro" program, which includes strengthening public security.
There's a "C5i control center", which will monitor the the almost 6 thousand surveillance cameras that are being installed in the state, as well as the 219 road arches with license plate reading technology.
Likewise, the government assists with scholarships for the children of policemen for their college studies, which increases their commitment to their work and helps combat corruption.


Mérida has a privileged location in the country since it can be accessed by land, sea, or air, making it easy to connect with the rest of the country and the European Union.
As it's only 30 minutes from the beach of Puerto Progreso, Mérida is a strategic center for exports and imports logistics in the Yucatan peninsula. That's why brands like Amazon, Walmart, Cerveceria Modelo, and Tesla have chosen this city for their distribution centers. Merida is also a growing touristic port.
The renewable and wind energy projects operating in the Yucatan state confirm it as one of the best to invest in all of Mexico. An example is Parque Eólico Progreso, with 36 wind turbines that are 120 meters tall and rotor blades that are 55 meters in length.


The archeological zones surrounding the state, its museums, haciendas, as well as the peculiar evolution of its architecture and its history, make it one of the richest regarding the cultural offer. Its gastronomy has received different international and national awards because of its unique mix of spices and condiments.
The city is the academic and health center of southeastern Mexico. It has colleges such as Universidad Anahuac Mayab, Universidad Autónoma de Yucatán, Universidad Marista, Universidad Modelo, and Tec Milenio, amongst others.
